It is with great pleasure that we are starting our Road Linen adventure. Our 1st stop is Rihour Place, in Lille which is the capital of Flanders.
Lille is the fourth largest city in France and was voted the most welcoming city in 2012. You just have to come and visit it. To help you discover this magnificent city, we suggest the 9 most iconic locations:
Our favorite Place
The Grand Place is definitely the most known site in the city. This beautiful square is appreciated by the people of Lille and is the perfect archetype of the Flemish architecture. Discover its fountains, its beautiful colorful buildings, taste the gorgeous food in the restaurants or sip a café at the square, allowing yourself to soak in the sumptuous surroundings.
This is a must to visit. It was elected a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2005. The Belfry dominates the town with its 104 meters height. Once you are up on top, you can discover all of Lille and its surroundings. Do try and visit the Belfry when the weather is good to fully appreciate the view.
Our favorite neighborhood
Our favorite neighborhood is “Le Vieux Lille”, strolling in the street Esquermoise, Basse and de la Monnaie. It is the quintessential area to find original small designer shops, accessories and luxury boutiques. All the major luxury brands including Yves Delorme situated in “rue Basse” have taken up residence. The cobblestones and narrow streets imbue an atmospheric air that makes us appreciate this district even more.
The sweetness break
For tearooms, restaurants and delicious pastries, head for Meert which is the area to go to have a rest and enjoy a gourmet feast. A large selection of seductive foods awaits you, a perfect recipe for an enjoyable time.
Flora, flowers and animals
The Citadelle’s park and its zoo: a popular place on the Lille itinerary. As soon as the sun is out, everyone is in the park picnicking, bike riding, jogging or discovering the zoo (free entry) with more than 400 animals. Reopened since 1st May, the zoo has been completely redesigned and updated for visitors as well as animals, which makes a joy to walk around!
A breath of culture before you depart
The Tripostal is a place full of art and life where you can find rich, varied and original exhibitions. A must see for lovers of contemporary art and culture, it is located right next to the train station, it is the ideal place to visit before departing on the next leg of your trip.
Our favorite museum
The Palais des Beaux Arts is situated in Republic’s place right in the center of Lille. It is considered one of the most beautiful and biggest museum of France. More than 2,000 works of art are on exposition for you to discover.
Named Aux Merveilleux, this is the Pastry of Wonders. It is known and recognized internationally for its famous cakes available in six wonderful flavours. Besides the house specialty, brioches and other sweet cakes are also created with the same talent. Aux Merveilleux is simply THE pastry to taste from Lille.
La Vieille Bourse and its book market
The book market is held in the heart of the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse and is absolutely charming. You can find old books and admire the magnificence of the Vieille Bourse building. It is a haven of peace and quiet in the heart of the city. Open from Tuesday to Sunday, afternoon only.
